The Night of the Arts takes over Helsinki 27 August

The Night of the Arts takes over Helsinki for the 22nd time on 27 August. Audiences will again be treated to new art and new experiences that they can enjoy both as spectators and as active participants. What is so unique about the Night of the Arts is the way it allows visitors to leap from one atmosphere to another, from the calm of an art gallery to an exuberant world music concert or from a dusky park to a poetry fashion show or media art display. The programme lists all the events taking place on the night. We suggest that you try to resist the temptation to draw up a detailed timetable and instead let the events lead you - take time to wander and wonder.

Happy Helsinki takes over the urban space with a series of dazzling artistic feats, unfolding in a number of unexpected venues across Helsinki. During the eight-day run, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy music, dance, siestas and much, much more. The series culminates in the Night of the Arts extravaganza on Friday 27 August.

Happy Helsinki series has been created by choreographer Sami Saikkonen, musician Pekka Kuusisto, environmental artist Kaisa Salmi, painter Markku Hakuri and art duo Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen.

Helsinki Festival and Helsingin Sanomat are now seeking enthusiastic and committed volunteers to help run the series. Anyone interested in taking part is invited to sign up through our website from Friday 25 June (see more info below). Further information will be sent to all prospective volunteers by e-mail once an application has been submitted.

Ask not what art can do for you but what you can do for art - sign up today!

Are you tolerant, broad-minded and of no particular age? Art needs you to volunteer a brief moment of your time to help run a series of art events taking place from 20 to 27 August. We are offering you an unforgettable experience without financial reward. No previous experience necessary but plenty to be gained. All events are straightforward and fun mass art events, often short in duration.

To make them happen, we need you - and your friends and family too. All events will be run and fully supervised by well-known professional artists. We don't expect you to have any prior experience or specialist skills. We will also not be offering any form of financial remuneration for your services but are confident that you will leave the event many new experiences the richer.

At this point, we are not yet divulging full details of what the series will entail or what will be required of you on the day. What we are doing, however, is compiling a database of prospective volunteers and we would be thrilled to have you onboard. Art expects - sign up today!

Please note that all pre-event information and training, where relevant, will generally be provided in Finnish only. However, the events themselves can be enjoyed regardless of your language skills so please don't hesitate to join us!

If you are interested in volunteering, please send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Don't forget to include the following details:

Important! Applications at this stage are not binding. Once you have expressed interest, we will contact you at the beginning of August to give you details of which event, including date, time and venue, we would like you to assist at. Applications will be accepted until 26 August.
